The distribution of exocrine glands in Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus (Copepoda: Caligidae) Naturalis
Bell, S.; Bron, J.E.; Sommerville, C..
The morphology, function and distribution of exocrine glands of copepods have rarely been studied in detail and almost nothing is known about them in the sea lice species L. salmonis and C. elongatus. This study utilised a novel application of a light-microscopy staining technique to reveal a variety of glands m nauplius, copepodid, chalimus, preadult and adult stages. The stain, 3’,3-diaminobenzidine tetrahydrochloride (DAB), applied to fresh material, differentiated a population of exocrine glands and enabled a study of their distribution. The stain was successful in highlighting the ducts and pores associated with the larger glands. The locations of gland sub-populations were conserved in all life-stages, although glands in the swimming legs were found...

Concordance patterns in zooplankton assemblages in the UHE - Luís Eduardo Magalhães reservoir in the Mid-Tocantins river, Tocantins State, Brazil - doi: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v33i2.7336 Biological Sciences
Bessa, Gisele Fernandes; Universidade Federal do Tocantins; Vieira, Ludgero Cardoso Galli; Universidade de Brasília; Bini, Luis Mauricio; Universidade Federal do Goiás; Reis, Deusiano Florêncio dos; Universidade Federal do Tocantins; Morais, Paula Benevides de; Universidade Federal do Tocantins.
The goal of this study was to evaluate the concordance amongst three zooplankton groups (Rotifera, Cladocera, and Copepoda) and between the zooplankton groups and the environmental variables in the Luis Eduardo Magalhães reservoir, in the Mid-Tocantins River, Tocantins State, Brazil. Concordance patterns were found in relation to environmental variables, cladocerans, and rotifers, although values were relatively low. These results indicate that one should be cautious about the use of indicative taxonomic groups to detect environmental changes, where divergent results annul extrapolation possibilities and indicate the existence of distinct environmental factors controlling different groups.

Lovenula (Neolovenula) alluaudi (Guerne and Richard, 1890) in the Canary Islands (Copepoda: Calanoida: Paradiaptominae). Stygofauna of the Canary Islands, 19 Naturalis
Bowman, Thomas E..
Lovenula (Neolovenula) alluaudi is widespread on Lanzarote, where it occurred at 22 of the 105 stations. On Fuerteventura it was found at only 2 of the 53 stations, both in the extreme northwest part of the island. It was also found in a reservoir on the south side of the small island of Alegranza. Samples collected at several hundred stations in the other Canary Islands failed to yield a single calanoid, supporting the belief that the eastern islands are fragments of the African continent that drifted to deeper waters. Males outnumbered females in about 2/3 of the samples, often heavily.

Ultrastructure of the cuticle of the chalimus larva of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1837) (Copepoda: Caligidae) Naturalis
Bron, J.E.; Shinn, A.P.; Sommerville, C..
The cuticle of the chalimus II stage of Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda: Caligidae) comprised a four-layered epicuticle with a pronounced fuzzy coat which was separated from the outer and inner procuticles by a layer of transitional procuticle. The cuticle is underlain by a single-layered epidermis which overlies integumental glands and chromatophores. The structure of this cuticle is very similar to that described for free-living copepods and does not display the modifications associated with more highly transformed parasitic species.

Moulting in the chalimus larva of the salmon louse Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Copepoda, Caligidae) Naturalis
Bron, J.E.; Shinn, A.P.; Sommerville, C..
The ultrastructure of moulting in the chalimus phase of the parasitic caligid copepod Lepeophtheirus salmonis is described for the first time. The major features of the moult sequence correspond to those of other Crustacea, save for the absence of a distinguishable intermoult as defined by reduced epidermal activity and a cessation of cuticle production. This latter may be explained cither in terms of a continuous moulting process related to the constant food supply available to a parasite or in terms of a highly abbreviated intermoult period. The findings are discussed with respect to studies of other Crustacean species.

El rol del frente de mareas de Península Valdés en el control de la comunidad zooplanctónica OceanDocs
Derisio, C..
The Península Valdés tidal front was studied in its rol in the control of the spatial distribution, abundance, assemblages, diversity and life histories of the zooplankton community using samples from two oceanographic surveys. Although the front showed in general high zooplankton abundances, highest values, mainly due to the presence of immature stages of copepods, were recorded in the transitional and stratified zones coinciding with highest values of chlorophyll a. The zooplankton groups showed a distinctive spatial distribution across the front. The results showed that this front did not exert any control on zooplankton composition and diversity, but did on the abundance. In the homogeneous zone the harpacticoid copepods were more abundant, followed by...

Inter-annual variability of planktonic copepods in a tropical bay in southeastern Brazil BABT
Dias,Cristina de Oliveira; Bonecker,Sérgio Luiz Costa.
The aim of this work was to study the structure of the copepod community in relation to hydrographic conditions in Espírito Santo Bay, from 1993 to 1997. Zooplankton samples were obtained in the horizontal tows four times a year, using a 200 µm net. Temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen were determined in the water samples. The overall mean density of the copepods was 9,085 ind.m-3 with the peaks exceeding 15,000 ind.m-3 in the summer and autumn during the first three years (1993 - 1995). The PCA analysis was used to relate the environmental conditions with the distribution of the copepods. The increases in the abundant species, namely Acartia lilljeborgi, Oithona hebes, Oithona oculata, Paracalanus quasimodo, Parvocalanus crassirostris and Euterpina...

Distribution, diversity, and habitat partitioning of Scolecitrichidae species (Copepoda: Calanoida) down to 1,200 m in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean Anais da ABC (AABC)
DIAS,CRISTINA O.; ARAUJO,ADRIANA V. DE; BONECKER,SÉRGIO L.C..
In this study, we analyzed the main distributional features of Scolecitrichidae species in the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean (northern region of Rio de Janeiro State) and determined and described their habitat partitioning, based on a night series of stratified samplings down to a depth of 1,200 m. A total of 18 species from seven genera were identified and grouped according to their depth distribution. Distinct vertical patterns of total density, richness, diversity, and evenness were observed, with a decrease in density and an increase in diversity and richness with increasing depth. The total scolecitrichid abundance was dominated by a few epipelagic migrant species (Scolecithrix danae, Scolecithricella minor, Amallothrix tenuiserrata, and Lophothrix...

Can nearby eutrophic reservoirs sustain a differentiated biodiversity of planktonic microcrustaceans in a tropical semiarid basin? Anais da ABC (AABC)
DINIZ,LEIDIANE P.; MELO-JÚNIOR,MAURO DE.
ABSTRACT This paper aims to compare alpha and beta diversities of planktonic microcrustaceans from three reservoirs located nearby in a tropical semiarid basin. Our hypothesis was that alpha and beta diversities of the community are different, although the ecosystems are located close to each other. We carried out two sampling campaigns: dry and rainy seasons. The sampling of microcrustaceans and environmental variables (dissolved oxygen, chlorophyll a and nutrient) was performed at twelve stations and were distributed throughout the three zones (river, transition, and lacustrine), using a plankton net (45 µm). The reservoirs showed different uses and types of nitrogen predominance: Cachoeira (supply/nitrate), Borborema (sewage/ammonia) and Saco...

Precopulatory mate guarding and mating in Tachidius discipes (Copepoda: Harpacticoida) Naturalis
Dürbaum, Johannes.
Precopulatory mate guarding and mating behaviour of Tachidius discipes Giesbrecht, 1881, has been analysed using a video camera mounted on a microscope. Males preferably accompany fourth or fifth stage female copepodids during precopulatory mate guarding; only rarely are third copopodid stages guarded. Rare cases of males clasping juvenile males are also known. Males are active during mate guarding and constantly change the site of attachment of their antennules. This behaviour may ensure continued association of the adult male with the juvenile copepodid when the latter moults during the mate guarding phase. The final moult of the female, once observed only, lasts only 2 minutes. Copulation immediately follows but is preceded by the male’s control of the...

Biologie du copepode Lernaeenicus sprattae Sowerby, 1806) et ses actions pathogenes sur les populations de sardines des cotes du Languedoc-Roussillon. ArchiMer
El Gharbi, Salwa; Rousset, Viviane; Raibaut, André.
Lernaeenicus sprattae is a blood-feeding copepod parasite of the pilchard, Sardian pilchardus . The larval stages of L. sprattae attach to the skin or the fins of the larval fish when the fish enter the lagoons. The mature, and in some cases ovigerous females of L.sprattae seek out the base of the fins or directly implant in the eye of juvenile or adult pilchards. The copepod has a particularly serious effect at the site of infection: its feeding has a severe effect on the fish. The pilchard returns to its breeding grounds in the open sea at the end of summer; this migration allows the copepod to complete its reproductive cycle and a new cycle of infestation is able to begin.

Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii, a new species of cyclopid (Copepoda: Cyclopoida) from Belize, with remarks on the morphology of the genus Neocyclops Naturalis
Falavigna da Rocha, Carlos Eduardo.
Neocyclops (Protoneocyclops) ferrarii sp. n. is described from Candy’s Pond, Twin Cays, Belize. It is morphologically closest to N. (P.) wellsi Petkovski, 1986 from Mozambique and N. (P.) herbsti Petkovski, 1986 from the Red Sea. Pediger 1 in Neocyclops is distinct although reduced and often concealed beneath the cephalic shield. Specimens of Neocyclops (N.) vicinus and N. (N.) medius showed the same condition, warranting the supposition that the free pediger 1 is a consistent feature of the genus. The genital double somite bears a transverse cuticular thickening which apparently supports the seminal receptacle. The importance of the integumental pore patterns of the urosome and legs as useful taxonomic characters is pointed out.
